SAT-I Exam on 3rd December

I hope everyone is taking necessary preparation for the coming 3rd December resit.

I have little to add - except for the fact that excellent physical preparation will be the crucial element for a better performance. I also want you to access three previous blogposts - the first one on exam preparedness titled "Prelude to Saturday", and the other two written by the students on SAT-I Exam Reporting.

On Reading

The Month of December

Prepare adequately for the month of December. I hope well do you understand what is meant by Prepare! It means the following et al.

  • Salubrious Diet
  • Adequate Sleep at night [not later than 12 a.m.]
  • Keep low social profile
  • Thinking Creatively
  • Write - Edit - Edit - Edit -Edit - Write
  • Review all the Vocabulary from Stressbook.
  • PLAN the week's work - or face consequences of unbelievable proportions.
  • Do not take too much time in choosing Colleges/Universities

Changes to Our BLOG

Dear Students,

I have made some changes in our BLOG by adding some Gadgets.
  • You can now Search the entire BLOG for anything you want to recheck.
  • There is a list of my favorite BLOGS. The first fours should also be of big help in your own reading.
  • I have also widened the BLOG page so as to make it easier to read posts.
I hope you will return to this BLOG everyday and find something to put you into thinking. As before, I have decided to keep the BLOG free of any ad.

I would appreciate it very much if you could suggest anything you want to see in the BLOG's post.

Finally, keep working on the December SAT-I preparation and Applications to the colleges.

Of Liberal Humanism - and Capitalism

"When capitalism slumps, one of its dominant ideological structures - liberal humanism is regularly deflected into an idealist brand of Marxism. When capitalism recovers, liberal humanism disentangles itself from its materialist trappings and resumes its proper role as the impotent conscience of bourgeois society."

Standby Registration - College Board sent a mail to Mehruba

"To be considered for standby testing, please be present at the test center on test day before 7:30 a.m. Bring a completed Registration Form, sealed in its envelope, along with payment by check, money order, or credit card. Checks and money orders should be made payable to "The College Board." You will also be charged a $43.00 standby fee in addition to the regular fee for the test or tests you wish to take."

What I Deserve At This Stage

At this stage I at least deserve a mail from each one of our class telling me their level of preparation.

Putting a 'funny' tag on this post will be regarded an act of mediocrity.

I hope you respond in a responsible language.

[Too many mediocre people - much too many - I have just noticed that in 5 h 30 min this post has attracted 4 'funny' tags and only 5 e-mail reports appraising me of preparation level].

I especially liked the Geometry section. I just found out that there is also a section on Probability.

Here it is - http://www.khanacademy.org/

'Location' versus 'Passion' - FB messages exchanged on 13th November 2011

FROM ME
Hello Lamia. I hope you are fine and doing well. It would be an excellent thing to know what have been happening since we met last. I am in the same 'station of life' and has blissfully accepted my 'location.'

FROM LAMIA
Hello Sir,

Great to hear from you. I'm doing well, majoring in Astrophysics from Wellesley College. This year I'm in UK doing Junior Year Abroad, studying Physics at University of Oxford for the whole year.

Apart from all these, life has been treating me well ... can't complain. Now that senior year is nearby, trying to realize what i want to do after college. Academics and research is what appealing me most, but I am not sure whether I have the necessary caliber or enough passion to last me a lifetime of chasing Einstein's fudge factor.

Emergency Meeting on SAT-II Tomorrow Monday + A Quote

Dear All,

I want all November examinees to meet me tomorrow at 8.30 am - ideally it should be a two hour discussion on SAT-II progress and plan for our next classes regarding SAT-I after 19th November.

I WANT TO ARRANGE AT LEAST TWO COMPLETE MOCK TESTS FOR SAT-II.

It is strongly advised that we have a plenary meeting - therefore, participation of all is required.

Those who are giving SAT-I in November - Mehruba, Raad, Tahsina - shall sit with me for a discussion of Writing/Grammar strategies on Tuesday at 8.30 am.

A Quote I just came by

“Strength of character means the ability to overcome resentment against others, to hide hurt feelings, and to forgive quickly.”

Mathematical Atlas

Here is a website on a subject that Bertrand Russell once dubbed as: "The science one could go on practicing should one wake up one morning to find that the world has ceased to exist."

SATURDAY Schedule - Disciplined Body & Mind

Dear Students,

I will be in the class from 9 am till 2 pm. You are requested to find a time to meet me regarding SAT-II and SAT-I preparation and Admission Advice.

Tomorrow will be our last class before EID. I want to resume classes from coming Thursday. I just want to remind everyone that getting a 2000 in SAT-I is absolutely an easy task - only one thing you will require - a disciplined BODY & MIND during the final WEEK of preparation.

Eid Mubarak to everyone.

Application Essay - Tone and Voice

In response to one of the several essays I have received in the last few days I came up with the following observations.

1. Whole essay is mostly about your academic achievements and your undergrad subject choice.
2. Personal goals are little elucidated.
3. I do not know if the length of the essay is within the word - limit.
4. The language is stiff with no variation of tone and voice.

After this response the writer advised me the following:

Could you elaborate a bit on the fourth point that you have mentioned? How do I bring in more variety of tones and voice?

Here is my response to the above query:

The very question of voice is EXTREMELY subjective. It may appear to one that there is not enough voice. But in my original response (see no 4 above), I also included the issue of VARIETY of TONE and VOICE.

You see - I am talking about a VARIETY that depends on exactly the kind of College/Univ you are applying to. In  case of TUFTS university we took up a tone that is DARING to say the least. For our voice we decided to present a semi-serious and semi-ironic and self-effacing TONE that was spread across ALL the essays we created.

Again, the above suggestion is MERELY Advisorial and should NOT be taken as a Final Judgement on this very crucial issue.

Wednesday 2 November 2011

TOEFL and SAT Class/Mock

We are going to resume our SAT class from tomorrow. It is better that we start MOCK at 8.15.

For TOEFL - everyone is strongly advised to to take the exam after the SAT-I December take. Those who are thinking of completing their CSS profile are advised not to proceed further and rather concentrate on SAT-II, SAT-I and Application ESSAYS.

Any further query shall be posted through BLOG unless it is a personal case.

A few words - such things you will need very soon

As part of your articulation process you will need to be able to construct sequence of words like the one below.

Our hope is that these books will, by turns, instruct,
intrigue, embolden, encourage and delight.

Speaking of 'Reading Marx" - General Editor's Preface

The FIRST application - ED to TUFTS - Leaves Dhaka Today

The first application for this season leaves Dhaka through FEDEX. The pack weighed about 700gr and cost about 3000 taka. The cost of sending packs can be reduced if you send it through OCS.

As per requirements are concerned - the application included the following PAPERS written by the student.
  1. Significant ECA experience essay
  2. Common Application Essay - Topic of your own choice
  3. TUFTS Supplementary essays -
      • Let your life speak
      • Why TUFTS
      • A variation of the PS
  4. Apart from these all other School Documents such as Teacher Reco, Counselor Reco, SAT Score Sheet, Art Portfolio, O Level and A Level Results - accompanied the application.
  5. The application will also include a tailor-made Video - the script is in progress and the shooting will probably take place sometime during the Eid vacation.
The working hour invested in the preparation of above items in the last 3 weeks is - 50 hours.

All ANGLOPHILES applicants are being requested to work full scale on the applications. We shall resume our classes from TOMORROW. I am very slowly recovering from my leg injury. But I want to be here the whole day.

Tomorrow timing - 8.30 am - 12.00 am

We could have a SAT-II Mock on Thursday starting from 3.00 PM.

You are requested to send your opinion on this schedule.
